History

Centre for Human Rights Education (CHRE) is a non-profit, non-governmental and non-political organization established by a group of human rights educators and defenders to strengthen the human rights culture through educational programs and advocacy initiatives.

CHRE supports human rights learnings, training of human rights defenders, civil society groups, government institutions, the development of educational materials and advocacy initiatives to advocate and advance the protection and promotion of human rights.

CHRE's motive is to introduce and apply innovative and participatory methods and techniques for all its educational programs.

CHRE anticipates that the individuals and groups will apply the learnings of the CHRE educational programs and will initiate advocacy programs to translate their learning into practice.

VISION:

CHRE envisions to build the capacity of the civil society, communities and government institutions to foster a culture of human rights.

MISSION:

CHRE strives for the advancement of equality and respect for human dignity in Pakistan and around the world through human rights education programs, research and advocacy initiatives.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Building the capacity and understanding of the civil society groups, human rights defenders and the government institutions.
  • Enhancing the realization and understanding of Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other human rights standards.
  • Research and Advocacy for the policy and legislative reforms for the protection and promotion of human rights.
  • Development of strategic alliances and partnerships with like-minded individual and civil society groups to carry forward its vision and mission.

Respect for All

Development of a culture which believes that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights and everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, without any discrimination.

Freedom of Expression

Fostering of a culture which allows free expression of opinions and ideas, ensuring the democratic process is followed in decision making which is not only important for individual dignity but also to participation, accountability and democracy.

Integrity

Working transparently as compatible to the vision and mission of CHRE. Creating and maintaining an environment conducive to follow and implement the systems of accountability.

Gender Mainstreaming

Expanding the scope of gender mainstreaming by maintaining the equal opportunity environment for men and women at all levels, ensuring the participation of women in its decision making through their presence in the Governing Body and maximum inclusion in programs.

Democratic Decision Making

Maintaining a democratic culture ensuring that the decisions follow the democratic process, and the team members fully participate in discussions and deal openly with differences of opinion hence play an impotant role in decision making.

Development of strategic alliances and partnerships with those committed to the advancement of democracy and human rights programs

Capacity Building Program

CHRE Capacity Building Program aims to build the capacity and understanding of the civil society groups, human rights defenders and the government institutions for the civil society groups, human rights defenders and the government institutions for the advancement of a human rights culture.

The features of Capacity Building Program are the short courses on human rights, democratic development, gender equality, religious tolerance and harmony. These courses provide foundation for the research and advocacy initiatives.

Objectives

  • Providing information and conceptual clarity on the subject matter human rights, democracy gender equality, religious tolerance and harmony.
  • Encouraging the development of skills, and the formulation and application of policies, necessary to transform that information into practical professional behavior
  • Sensitization of participants to their particular role in the advancement of a human rights culture.
  • Building partnerships and networking among the participants and their groups.
  • Planning and strategy development for putting the participants learnings into practice.

CHREs each course are of approximately 140 hours duration and the participants of the courses are called CHRE Alumni. CHRE ensures that the Alumni and their organizations put their learnings into practice and are able to contribute to the over all struggle of the civil society for the advancement of human rights.

Research and Advocacy Program

Research and Advocacy Program focuses research on the following thematic issues:

The research follows innovative advocacy initiatives with the collaboration of CHRE Alumni and like-minded organizations.

Partnership Point

CHRE serves as a Partnership Point for the Alumni, civil society organization and state institutions working for Human Rights Education. It adopts innovative and technology friendly ways and means for partnership and networking building.

Consultancy Point

CHRE is also a Consultancy Point to provide a range of professional services in human rights for international and national non-governmental organizations, community based organizations and the Government Institutions with our core commitment to building their capacity to enhance the realization of political, civil, economic, social and cultural human rights of all individuals.
